Headaches and Migraines with our Modesto Chiropractor

Man with a headache

Headaches and migraines are both considered disorders of the nervous system. However, while a migraine is a type of headache, there are often different sensations and symptoms associated with migraines. Here is some more information that will help give you a better understanding of headaches and migraines.

Differences between Headaches and Migraines

If you say you have a headache, you are probably experiencing pain in the front, back, or sides of the head, the facial area, or behind the eyes. Some people might also feel pain in their neck. There are several different kinds of headaches that all have different causes. Some of the most common types of headaches include:

  • Tension headaches
  • Cluster headaches
  • Sinus headaches
  • Chronic daily headaches

Migraines are a type of headache that is typically characterized by a painful throbbing sensation, usually on one side of the head and that can be accompanied by vision problems and nausea. Other symptoms that can be exclusive to migraine headaches include vomiting, dizziness, and sensitivity to light and sounds.

Common Causes of Headaches and Migraines

It is easy to determine the cause of some types of headaches. For example, you can get a headache simply by eating something cold. This type of headache is aptly named an ice cream headache. Sinus headaches are caused by a sinus infection and caffeine headaches are caused by missing your daily dose of caffeinated coffee. Tension headaches are considered to be the most common type of headache. Tension headaches are felt on both sides of the head or in the back of the head and neck. Some things that trigger a tension headache include: increased stress levels, anxiety, and poor posture.

It can be more difficult to determine the cause of migraines. Some people are genetically prone to getting this type of headache, with more women being affected than men. The causes of migraines can differ from person to person, but some of the most common triggers include: hormonal changes, stress, lack of sleep, certain types of foods, dehydration, and a change in sleeping habits. Migraines can be completely debilitating and can interfere with work and other daily activities.

Chiropractic Care for Headaches and Migraines

While most people look to over-the-counter medications to relieve their headache pain, chiropractic care offers a more natural and effective way to treat certain types of headaches, especially tension headaches and migraines. Spinal adjustments often offer immediate results, and in most cases, people will have fewer headaches after getting adjusted by a chiropractor.
